The game is played by bouncing Dedede across the drums. The player can move by pressing right and left on the +Control Pad while bouncing to the finish, avoiding foes along the way. Pressing the A button as soon as Dedede land on a drum will make him perform a High Jump, and again will make him do a Super Jump. To maintain bounces, Dedede must land in the center of each drum; he will be thrown off if he lands on a drum's edge.
Pressing A at the peak of a jump will cause King Dedede to clap on the backbeat, boosting the player's score depending how consecutive the combo is. The player can get more points by collecting Musical Coins. Bronze coins are worth 50 points, silver coins 200, gold coins 500. The backbeat is graded by Good (Dedede claps) and Great (Dedede beats on a tambourine). After Dedede bounces sky high off the Goal Drum, the game ranks the player on performance with a bronze, silver, gold, or platinum medal ranking.
Dedede must be cautious. He will lose instantly if he falls into a pit, takes five damage, or runs out of time. Hitting an enemy will cause the king to lose his combo, a heart, and some points. In the last stage, Dedede only has three hearts.
Bonuses are awarded if the player completes certain tasks before reaching the Goal Drum. These include:
- 15 points for every 0.1 seconds remaining
- A time bonus (1000 points)
- No Damage (1000 points)
- All Coins (1000 points)
- Backbeat Perfect (1000 points)
