The famous creators of Kirby’s Adventure Wii, HAL Laboratory, have left their mark on the game in more ways than one. Only the most acute observers and meticulous explorers would happen upon them, but there are actually two secret locations where you’ll find the word “HAL” spelled out in blocks. Not only that, these areas also contain Copy Abilities that can come in very handy indeed!
— Description • Nintendo UK support[1]

A HAL Room[2] (also written Hal Room[3]) is a secret area found in several Kirby games. The rooms have Star Blocks arranged to spell out the word HAL, the shorthand name of HAL Laboratory, the company that developed the Kirby series. Usually, a Broom Hatter is seen sweeping and cleaning the letter L.

HAL Rooms have appeared in every mainline Kirby game directed by Shinya Kumazaki.

Games[]

Kirby's Adventure[]

Halroom

Vegetable Valley HAL Room

Kirby's Adventure’s HAL Room is a hidden area rather than a complete room. It is located in Stage 2 of Vegetable Valley. Once Kirby reaches the point in the beginning of the stage with a Warp Star on top of a small hill, he has to move back from the hill until the star disappears. Once Kirby moves beyond that point, he can access the HAL Room.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[]

Blocks spelling out "HAL" can be found in Level 3 of Block Attack. In Stage 11, Kirby can head to the right and defeat a Topper positioned in front of the goal. It is possible to see blue indestructible blocks here, which spell out the name HAL.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[]

HAL Room

Illusion Islands HAL Room

Kirby Super Star Ultra’s HAL Room is located in the Illusion Islands stage in the Revenge of the King sub-game. Kirby must first get any ability that can pound in stakes, preferably the Stone ability from a Rocky a few rooms back, and head to the area with the Mr. Angleps. Once he finds the stake, he'll have to pound it flat, which will destroy many blocks in the path. Instead of heading right, however, he must head left toward the green square one block away. Kirby can enter this block of color like a door.

After a battle with Mr. Tick-Tock, Kirby will reach the HAL Room, which houses the signature Broom Hatter, a Maxim Tomato, a 1UP and an Invincibility Candy.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]

There are two HAL Rooms in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. There are Copy Essences in the rooms besides the blocks and an assortment of Point Stars. A remix of the Green Greens theme plays in the rooms.

  • The first HAL Room is in the first room in Stage 4 of Cookie Country. The player must travel through the room and past the door; after touching the right side of the screen, turn back to find that some platforms previously crossed have collapsed and disappeared, revealing a door disguised as a bush below. This room has Hammer, Fighter, Ninja, and Wing Copy Essences, and the customary Broom Hatter. This room has five red stars, three of which are hidden in the letter L, as well as sixteen Pop Flowers. This room is shown as one of the adventure snapshots in the credits before VS Lor and Magolor.
    • In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Sand and Mecha Copy Essences were added.
    • This HAL Room can be found in the the demo for Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. The copy essences provided are Sword, Sand, Fire, and Water instead of the one's found within the main game.
  • The second HAL Room is in the third room in Stage 5 of Egg Engines. At the end of the room, the player must pass the door and traverse through the conveyor belts the Halcandran Waddle Dees were traveling on. At the end of the top conveyor, the player can enter a dark spot and head to the HAL Room. This room contains Whip, Water, Spear, and Leaf Copy Essences. A Halcandran Waddle Dee is on the L instead of the usual Broom Hatter. There are several cannons in the room, and an assortment of Point Stars, food, and a 1UP, some of which are hidden in the blocks. Similarly to the first HAL Room, this room is included in the adventure snapshots appearing in the credits; it comes before the image of VS Lor and Magolor EX.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, two more HAL Rooms were added:

  • The third HAL Room is in the fifth room in Stage 2 of Dangerous Dinner. The player has to reach the end of the room, in which there is an area that the ceiling will not fall down. Once there, instead of entering the door, the player must wait for 86 seconds. Once the time has passed, the ceiling will rise up, opening a path for the player to backtrack. The entrance to the HAL Room can be found at the start of the room. The player will be on an elevator that leads to the HAL Room on the top. While on the elevator, Super Hot Head appears, allowing Kirby to melt the Ice Blocks, including those in the HAL Room that are lined up as the outline of the letters H, A, and L, with the Monster Flame ability. There are no Copy Essences in this HAL Room. The door within leads to the room where Super Bonkers awaits, and Kirby can use the Monster Flame to defeat him in one blow.
  • The fourth HAL Room is in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler. Its entrance is located at the hub stage, below the gap that is next to the bottom of the ladder, connecting Aerogree Dimension and Pyred Dimension. Initially blocked by a one-way semisolid platform, Magolor has to find a small path at the very top-left of the hub stage, accessible after unlocking Locandra Dimension's Stage 4. After entering and reaching the end of the path, Magolor can return to the gap previously mentioned. If done correctly, explosions from Bomb Blocks can be heard when returning to the gap and the semisolid has been replaced by the two way variant. Magolor then can go through the gap to find a hidden Ordeal Door. In the hidden stage, the player is shot out of several cannons. The players must time their shots to hit falling Key Dees holding magic points or to avoid getting crushed by moving walls. At the end of this section, the player reaches the word HAL made up of Black Hole Blocks, with a traditional Broom Hatter on the L, a potion that completely refills Magolors Magic Meter, and the exit door. Using the black hole on the blocks rewards a lot of Magic Points. Upon exiting the stage for the first time, the First-Time Clear bonus is 860 Magic points. There are also at least total of 860 magic points in the stage, granted Magolor hits all of the Key Dees and obtains the maximum combo (by destroying all of the blocks at once).

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[]

Hal Room

Last Land HAL Room

The HAL Room is located in Last Land's Normal Challenge. Kirby will come across three Gigatzos (all of which are positioned on breakable blocks) and crumbling platforms. He can let the crumbling platforms break or destroy the breakable blocks with any attack to find a switch down below. Hitting that switch will cause a wall to move, revealing a door that leads to the HAL Room.

The music playing in the room is the Green Greens theme from either Kirby's Epic Yarn or Kirby's Return to Dream Land. The room starts out crowded with bricks, but as Kirby hits more switches, the bricks will move (revealing Score Coins and more switches); after the player has hit every switch, an exit door, more Score Coins, and the word HAL will be revealed.

Unlike usual, HAL isn't spelled out with Star Blocks, and no enemy stands on the L. Additionally, the space inside the A is only one block large, not two.

Because it holds numerous Score Coins, visiting the HAL Room is mandatory if the player wishes to get a platinum medal on the Challenge.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[]

There are three HAL Rooms in this game, more than any other before it.

  • The first one is in Stage 3 of Fine Fields. In the second room, Kirby must first find a 3D Warp Star hidden in the bushes. He then must travel to the background and touch the very edge of the screen, then travel back to where he entered to see that a 3D Warp Star has appeared. Upon using it, Kirby must then travel left. The music will suddenly change to the title theme from Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition. As usual, there is a Broom Hatter sweeping on the L accompanied with Wheel, Wing, Leaf, and Fighter Copy Essences. The Star Blocks contain an 1UP, a keychain, and a few Point Stars, along with a Maxim Tomato on the bottom of the A.
  • The second one is located in Stage 1 of Royal Road. After defeating Gigant Edge, Kirby must go to the far right and float upwards. There will be a moon in the background, and he must fly up and enter the secret entrance hidden in the moon, revealing a HAL Room. The music that plays is the Spring Breeze title music from Kirby Super Star Ultra. The Star Blocks that spell out HAL are broken up between the foreground and the background, and destroying the blocks in the foreground will reveal three 1UPs, a Maxim Tomato, and a keychain. The big Star Blocks in the background take three hits to destroy, and there is an insect Waddle Dee on the L. The room provides Circus, Archer, Bell, and Beetle Copy Essences.
  • The third one is in Stage 5 of Royal Road. During the 5x5 portion of the 3D Securitrons, when the player successfully completes the last one, they must wait 86 seconds until the blocks disappear. Blocks will then pop up in which they form the letters HAL in that order. A door will then appear in which Kirby must navigate a series of Tilt Gondolas and cannons. At the end, there is a keychain, a Maxim Tomato, a 1UP, and two blue Point Stars (worth 30).

These rooms can be entered with King Dedede in Dededetour as well.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[]

KFZHAL

The letters of "HAL" written by tiles

The name HAL is spelled out by tiles. It can be found at the fifth stage, VS Kracko, only on Very Hard difficulty.

Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe[]

DDDZ HAL

The letters of "HAL" formed by Musical Coins

The name HAL is spelled out by Musical Coins. It can be found at the end of Secret Level 7, C-R-O-W-N-E-D, but only on hard difficulty--on normal difficulty, the coins spell out "DDD."

Kirby: Planet Robobot[]

There are three HAL Rooms in Kirby: Planet Robobot. There are Copy Essences in the rooms besides the blocks and an assortment of stars.

  • The first room is located near the end of Stage 3 of Patched Plains. After entering a secret area containing three 1UPs (which can be accessed by using the door behind the sleeping Waddle Dee. This can be reached by using the 3D Warp Star near the final Code Cube, which is activated by a switch at the right side of the room), Kirby must float up to a thin passage at the top of the screen, travel through a square tube, pass a Noddy and Waddle Dee, and jump onto a Warp Star. This takes the hero to the first HAL Room.[4] The room contains tubes, a Maxim Tomato, a roulette Copy Essence, and Copy Essences for the Jet, Hammer, and Mirror abilities. The music from Spring Breeze's title screen in Kirby Super Star Ultra plays here.
  • The second HAL Room is located at the end of the first area in Stage 1 of Access Ark. It can be accessed by flying into a thin passage near the ceiling and pressing ↑ on a hole in the second President Haltmann portrait. The room contains the Smash Bros., Poison, Doctor, and ESP Copy Essences, as well as a Maxim Tomato and a sticker inside the letters. A Haltworker stands on the letter L in place of a Broom Hatter. The music from Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe plays here.
  • The third HAL Room can be reached by waiting for 86 seconds in the last area of Stage 4 of Access Ark, right by the Goal Door. After waiting, a door appears in the foreground plane and a 3D Warp Star appears to take Kirby to it. In the room, the block letters emerge from the background. A 1UP and a Walky appear in here, plus an additional goal door. The music from Kirby 3D Rumble's title screen plays here.

These rooms can be entered with Meta Knight in Meta Knightmare Returns as well.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe[]

TKCD HAL

"HAL" is spelled out on the crates.

If Kirby purchases all weapons and armor from Magolor, the Shoppe changes appearance. The crates beside the cart have the letters H, A, and L engraved on their sides.

Kirby's Blowout Blast[]

KBlBl HAL

"HAL" is spelled out by Score Coins.

Score Coins appear when Kirby defeats each boss in the Secret Path. The coins that appear after defeating Masher, Kracko's Revenge, and Mega Masher form the letters H, A, and L, respectively.

Kirby Star Allies[]

Three HAL rooms are located in the game. They can be found in the following locations:

  • In Fruity Forest, after walking to the area just before the fight with Whispy Woods, Kirby can head back to see a new door spawned at the beginning of the room. He can then go all the way back to start of the level to find a small tree with a door on top, which he can enter to access the HAL room. The HAL room contains the Cook, Suplex, Cleaning, and Yo-Yo Copy Essences, as well as a Picture Piece, a Maxim Tomato, and a 1UP inside the Star Blocks, with a Broom Hatter on the letter L. The Kirby's Blowout Blast arrangement of the Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe title theme plays here. Walking farther, Kirby will encounter a Friend Star friend platform with a Waddle Doo, and he can use this Friend Star to fight Whispy Woods.
  • In Heavenly Hall, during the section where Kirby rides the Friend Star while escaping the Jambastion, Kirby must wait for 86 seconds in the area where pieces of the ceiling are collapsing. A door will appear at the center of the area that leads to the room. This HAL room contains a Driblee and blades whose wires form the letters of HAL, with several Picture Pieces, 1UPs, and a Maxim Tomato located between those letters.
  • In Jambandra Base, at the end of the level, if Kirby flies above the goal, he will see what appears to be Planet Popstar through a hole in the background; he can then enter the image of Popstar like a door. The HAL Room contains the Spider, Artist, and Staff Copy Essences, as well as a Donpuffle for the Festival ability. The title theme from Kirby's Dream Land plays here. If Kirby destroys all the Star Blocks, ground blocks forming the letters of HAL will appear, with a bunch of Picture Pieces, 1UP, Maxim Tomato, and a Noddy on the L. This is the only HAL Room accessible in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!

Super Kirby Clash[]

SKC HAL

"HAL" is spelled out on the clouds.

After purchasing all weapons and armor, the word "HAL" rarely appears written in clouds above the villages, slowly drifting from left to right.

Kirby Fighters 2[]

During the battle with Waning Crescent Masked Dedede & Waxing Crescent Masked Meta Knight in the Final Chapter of Story Mode, when they perform their team strike attack, a constellation that forms the word "HAL" may twinkle briefly in the sky.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[]

Three HAL rooms are located in the game. They can be found in the following locations:

  • In Rocky Rollin' Road, at the end of the level, if Kirby jumps up to the tree on the right side and looks into the background, he will see a Target Switch separate from the one found earlier in the stage. Hitting the switch via the Ranger ability will activate a stone stairwell that leads to the top of the tower (If the player does not have Ranger at the time, a Ranger Copy Essence will appear nearby when Kirby jumps on the tree). After sliding down the back of the tower, Kirby will reach the HAL room. This room contains the Ice, Needle, Hammer, and Tornado Copy Essences, as well as two Gotcha Capsules inside the Star Blocks, with a sleeping Awoofy can be found on the L. An orange Warp Star can be found here, which takes Kirby back to the end of the stage.
  • In The Wondaria Dream Parade, in the optional racetrack area where Kirby can rescue the second hidden Waddle Dee, if Car-Mouth Kirby crosses the finish line when the clock displays 86 seconds, a small body of water with flowers spelling out HAL, as well as a bunch of food and Star Coins, will appear in-between the tracks.
  • In Burning, Churning Power Plant, at the end of the first room of the factory is a hidden control room off at the left side, containing two piles of Star Coins and a Treasure Chest containing a Gotcha Capsule. After entering this room, if Kirby makes his way back to the start of the level, he will be able to access a pathway previously unaccessible. Following this path will take Kirby to the room; destroying the crates and boxes will unveil steel boxes spelling out the letters H, A and L. A Vending Machine will then appear, allowing Vending-Mouth Kirby to destroy the boxes for Star Coins. Destroying these boxes will make a separate ring of food, Star Coins and a Gotcha Capsule. This room also contains the Ranger, Drill and Crash Copy Essences, as well as another Gotcha Capsule. The exit door leads back the the control room.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[]

In the Free Rolling area, there are three hidden cookies, each with a letter of HAL on them written in chocolate. Their locations as follow:

  • The "H" cookie can be found to the side of the pancake stack with syrup on it.
  • The "A" cookie is found behind the giant layer cake. A crate is covering it, so players will have to break it to see the cookie.
  • The "L" cookie is found on the large pudding a la mode, behind the assortment of toppings.

The locations of the three cookies are in the left, center, and right sectors of the map respectively, so the positions match the spelling.

Trivia[]

  • Kirby's Adventure’s HAL Room is the first HAL Room in the Kirby series, however it isn't the first HAL Room ever existed.
    • The very first HAL Room can be found in the game Sansū 4-nen: Keisan Game, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Tokyo Shoseki on October 30, 1986. The Room existed at Stage 22, with the bricks lined up as the letters.
    • Another HAL Room can be found in its sequel Sansū 5+6 nen: Keisan Game as well, also published at the same year. It was existed at Stage 17, with the upside-down letters on the field.
KNiD HAL Room

The unused HAL room in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

  • Kirby's Adventure’s HAL Room cannot be accessed in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. This may be due to unorthodox NES programming needed for it to behave as a special area inside another room; the game was released almost ten years after the introduction of the Family Computer in Japan, and HAL developers were pushing the system to the limits as to what it could do. Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land’s HAL Room is still inside the level's memory, but can only be accessed via cheats, and it lacks the Broom Hatter.[5] Also, in the original NES game, accessing the room requires the use of glitches, and it is not supposed to be normally accessible. Programming differences between systems (NES to GBA) and glitch fixes likely cut out any method to normally access this room.
  • The obscure way used to access the Cookie Country HAL Room in Kirby's Return to Dream Land may be a reference to the above fact that in Kirby's Adventure, this room is not normally accessible at all.
    • In turn, the way to access Fine Fields' HAL Room is a reference to Cookie Country's HAL Room is accessed.
  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby: Planet Robobot, Kirby Star Allies, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, each have a HAL Room that requires the player to wait for 86 seconds. This is because 86, when the numbers are represented by their Japanese pronunciation, is "haru," which is the Japanese word for HAL.
    • The third HAL Room in Kirby and the Forgotten Land features a similar reference using the number; the Vending Machine that appears in this room contains 860 Soda Cans.
    • In the hidden stage that contains the HAL Room in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, Magolor receives 860 Magic Points when clear the stage for the first time. Aside from the Clear Bonus, if all enemies are defeated, at least 860 Magic Points can be gathered (Some extra Magic Points may be gathered depending on the Combo count Magolor racked up.)
  • Every game in the BOXBOY! series contains at least one HAL Room. This is because HAL Laboratory, specifically team members who have worked on past Kirby games, also developed the BOXBOY! series.
  • The music tracks heard in the HAL Rooms in Kirby and the Forgotten Land are a medley of the main themes of the previous three Kirby titles for Nintendo Switch: Kirby Star Allies, Kirby Fighters 2, and Super Kirby Clash.
