Cut through ropes with the blade of a well-aimed boomerang. Aim it upward or down, or hold to charge up a Hyper Boomerang!
— Flavor Text • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Cutter is a Copy Ability in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Adventure.

Games[]

Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[]

Cutter focuses on throwing sharp boomerangs at enemies. Up to three Cutter Boomerangs can be on screen at a time; if the player tries to throw a fourth Cutter Boomerang, Kirby will simply do nothing until there are less than three Cutter Boomerangs on screen. Cutter can be obtained from the Sir Kibble enemy and the Mr. Shine boss's stars.

In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby's Cutter Boomerangs are a bit faster, making it more difficult for Kirby to try to exceed having three active Cutter Boomerangs; if the player tries to throw a fourth Cutter Boomerang, Kirby still performs his throwing animation, but doesn't actually throw anything.

Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3[]

Cutter can be combined with one of the Animal Friends to give it a different move. It is also the only Copy Ability that can destroy the Cutter Ability Blocks.

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Cutter can be combined with Rick, Coo, or Kine. Cutter can be obtained from Sir Kibble, the Waiu mid-boss, or Mr. Shine's stars.

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Cutter no longer has a limit on how many Cutter Boomerangs can be on screen; they can also be thrown slightly upward by pressing up. Cutter can also be combined with Nago, ChuChu, and Pitch. Gooey, who behaves near identically to Kirby, can also obtain Cutter. Cutter can be obtained from Sir Kibble, Kapar, and the Cutter Bukiset.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[]

Cutter can be combined with other Copy Abilities to create Power Combos, which can be used to create various cutting options. Cutter is capable of destroying green color-coded blocks. It can be obtained from Sir Kibble, Sawyer, Kapar, Fishbone, and Miracle Matter's Cutter form.

Power Combos[]

Power Combo Description
Cutter Kirby rips off his face and throws it as a boomerang by pressing B. Kirby can only walk and jump while the boomerang is active.
Burning Cutter Kirby releases a flaming sword from his mouth and holds it behind him by pressing B; this sword does passive damage to enemies that make contact with it. Pressing B while the sword is out causes Kirby to swing it in front of him. Pressing up when the sword is out causes Kirby to hold it over his head; pressing down in this state causes Kirby to lower it back to its original position. Pressing B when Kirby is holding the sword above him will cause him to throw it straight forward. While Kirby has the sword out, he cannot hover.
Stone Cutter Kirby transforms into a block of stone that is chiseled into one of Kirby's Animal Friends by pressing B. As Rick, Kirby can walk, jump, and climb up walls. As Coo, Kirby can jump and fly, but with a limited height. As Kine, Kirby can only turn around. As Nago, Kirby can walk and triple jump. As ChuChu, Kirby can jump. As Pitch, Kirby can jump, fly faster than Coo, and can rolls on the ground if moving fast enough upon landing. Pressing B while transformed changes Kirby back.
Ice Cutter Kirby's feet turn into ice skates by pressing B. Kirby now moves around by skating, and jumping will cause him to perform a damaging spinning jump. Pressing B again will cause Kirby's skates to go away.
Needle Cutter Kirby's hands become giant claws by pressing B. By holding B, Kirby can keep his claws out to his sides. By releasing B, Kirby snaps his claws shut above his head.
Bomb Cutter Kirby throws a ninja star by pressing B. The ninja star flies straight ahead, and if it makes contact with an enemy, it will stick into them briefly before exploding. Performing this move in the air resets Kirby's momentum.
Spark Cutter Kirby pulls out a double-bladed laser sword by pressing B. Pressing B while the sword is out causes Kirby to twirl the sword around, damaging anything around him. Pressing down causes the sword to disappear. While Kirby has the sword out, he cannot hover.
Cutter Cutter Kirby rips off his face and throws it as a boomerang by pressing B. The boomerang is bigger and covered in spikes, but Kirby is still limited to walking and jumping while it is active.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad[]

As with Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which preceded it, Cutter is limited to just the Cutter Boomerang. However, Kirby has more control over it, being able to aim it by holding up or down while throwing it, and also change its distance by holding down B. Cutter can also cut ropes again, and can additionally cut grass and bushes in Kirby: Squeak Squad. Cutter is obtained from Sir Kibble.

Upon obtaining the Cutter Ability Scroll, located in the Treasure Chest in Stage 4 of Nature Notch, Cutter now has a more powerful Cutter Boomerang; it's bigger and it penetrates enemies and blocks.

In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Cutter's Rare Outfit gives it Sir Kibble's helmet.

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, Cutter can be used by Robobot Armor to cut giant chains and logs. Cutter can be obtained from Sir Kibble, the Toon Link amiibo, and Star Dream Soul OS (Fourth Phase)'s shooter cutters.

Kirby Battle Royale[]

Cutter appears as an unlockable Copy Ability. It can be unlocked in The Cake Royale after obtaining 60 League Points in the Bronze League. Due to the 3D gameplay, the game lacks directional moves and instead uses multiple attack buttons. Hyper Boomerang has been replaced with Hyper Cutter, which does not return to the thrower; Sweep Cutter has been replaced with Jump Cutter, which is a projectile instead of a melee attack; Cutter Drop has been removed; Cleaving Cutter has been removed; and Final Cutter now functions as the Smash Bros. version, performing the whole move with a single input that doesn't need a nearby target. It has Headgear based on Sir Kibble's helmet, Mike's mohawk, and a knight helmet.

Cutter also appears as one of the default Copy Abilities in the game's demo.

Techniques[]

Move Controls Description Damage (Robo Bonkers)
Type A/Type C Type B/Type D
Cutter Boomerang B Y Kirby tosses a cutter from his hat. Cutter Boomerang is parallel to ground in 3D Battle Modes, but perpendicular in 2D Battle Modes. In 3D Battle Modes, once the cutter has reached its maximum distance, it will travel in the direction of the thrower at that moment. 120
Jump Cutter B during jump Y during jump Kirby throws a downwardly-angled cutter. The cutter's spin is perpendicular to the ground instead of parallel, and it does not return to the thrower. 70
Hyper Cutter Hold/release B Hold/release Y Kirby holds and enlarges his cutter. The thrown cutter can bounce off walls. Similar to Hyper Boomerang, but does not return to the thrower. Kirby can move while charging. 300
Final Cutter Y A Kirby slashes his Cutter upward, followed by a downward slash into the ground, creating a shockwave. Works more like his Smash Bros. variant, being able to activate whenever instead of only when near an enemy. 50 (initial slash), 40 (rising slash), 40 (falling slash), 50 (projectile)

Kirby Star Allies[]

Cutter is mostly unchanged from its appearance in Kirby: Planet Robobot. Cutter can be enhanced by the elements from other Copy Abilities. In addition to being obtained from Sir Kibble, who is its Friend Helper, Cutter can also be obtained from Vividria's Sawyer painting and Void Soul's/Void's Shooter Cutter attack.

Kirby Fighters 2[]

Cutter is unlocked after obtaining Fighters Rank 24. It is mostly unchanged from its appearance in Kirby Fighters Deluxe. It has two Rare Hats: the Sir Kibble Helmet from Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Battle Royale, and the Punk Mohawk.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[]

Cutter[]

The Cutter ability lets you stop your attack in midair and charge it up! Just hold down [B]/[Y] after you throw. Once it's charged up, let go of [B]/[Y] to unleash a powerful Return Attack!
— Weapons-Shop Waddle Dee

Due to the 3D gameplay, Cutter has been simplified. In addition to being able to cut ropes and grass, Cutter can now be used to grab items from afar; cutters also pierce enemies and destructible blocks and no longer harmfully bounce off walls. Cutters can no longer be precisely aimed when throwing, but returning cutters will home in on Kirby instead of simply going the opposite direction thrown. Instead of charging the cutter before throwing it, the cutter can be stopped at its maximum distance and charged from there, increasing in size and power before returning to Kirby. Final Cutter throws a cutter upon landing instead of producing a shockwave; like in Kirby Battle Royale, this is Cutter's only melee move. Cutter can be obtained from Sir Kibble and Chaos Elfilis' Shooter Cutter attack.

Cutter has a ★ Treasure Road, "Throw and Catch! Treasure Collecting," that can be accessed after clearing Stage 2 of Natural Plains, Through the Tunnel. It also has a ★ Treasure Road, "Line 'Em Up! Toss and Return," that can be accessed after clearing Stage 2 of Wondaria Remains, Circuit Speedway.

Cutter has a Power of 1 and a Rapid-Fire of 2.

After clearing the main story, Cutter's Power can be powered up 5 times. At +1, +2, and +3, it can be powered up with 1,000 Star Coins and 2 Rare Stones. At +4, it can be powered up with 1,200 Star Coins and 3 Rare Stones. At +★, it can be powered up with 2,500 Star Coins and 5 Rare Stones.

Chakram Cutter[]

Chakram Cutter appears as the first-level evolved ability of Cutter. Its Blueprint is already in possession of Weapons-Shop Waddle Dee when the Waddle Dee Weapons Shop is available. It can be evolved with 500 Star Coins and 2 Rare Stones.

Chakram Cutter allows cutters to be thrown in pairs in rapid succession. Kirby alternates which chakram he throws, throwing the right one for odd-numbered throws and the left one for even-numbered throws. When a chakram is returning normally, it curves outward before homing in on Kirby. Due to pairs of chakrams behaving mostly independent of each other, they can be thrown in different directions. Both chakrams can be stopped and charged in place, with the first one that was thrown returning earlier than the second. Final Cutter throws both chakrams upon landing.

Chakram Cutter has a ★★ Treasure Road, "Fling, Twirl, Return! Hit the Switches," that can be accessed after saving 20 Waddle Dees in Everbay Coast.

Chakram Cutter has a Power of 1 and a Rapid-Fire of 3.5.

After clearing the main story, Chakram Cutter's Power can be powered up 5 times.

Buzz-Saw Cutter[]

The Buzz-Saw Cutter's blade will bounce off walls. If you aim the bounces well, it can travel really far!
— Weapons-Shop Waddle Dee

Buzz-Saw Cutter appears as the second-level evolved ability of Cutter. Its Blueprint can be found in Stage 2 of Originull Wasteland, Searching the Oasis. It can be evolved with 800 Star Coins and 3 Rare Stones.

Buzz-Saw Cutter allows cutters to ricochet off walls and have multi-hit properties. Buzz-saws that make contact with a wall while being thrown will ricochet off the wall a significant distance, and can ricochet off multiple walls if applicable but will eventually break; buzz-saws can also ricochet during the return attack. Buzz-saws that ricochet during the throw cannot be grabbed and will not return to Kirby until finished ricocheting; buzz-saws that ricochet after the return attack do not home in on Kirby anymore, but can be grabbed on contact.

Buzz-Saw Cutter has a ★★★ Treasure Road, "Off the Wall! Ricochet Switches," that can be accessed after saving 38 Waddle Dees in Originull Wasteland.

Buzz-Saw Cutter has a Power of 3 and a Rapid-Fire of 3.

After clearing the main story, Buzz-Saw Cutter's Power can be powered up 3 times. At +1, it can be powered up with 1,000 Star Coins and 2 Rare Stones. At +2, it can be powered up with 1,200 Star Coins and 3 Rare Stones. At +★, it can be powered up with 2,500 Star Coins and 5 Rare Stones.

In the Super Smash Bros. series[]

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Final Cutter is Kirby's Up Special. Kirby slices upwards and then downwards, blade in front of him. Upon landing, he will create a shockwave. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Kirby can change his Final Cutter using Custom Moves. He can now also use Wave Cutter or Upper Cutter. Wave Cutter acts the same as Final Cutter, albeit the blade can't damage opponents, but upon landing, he will send powerful rocks flying. Upper Cutter allows Kirby to initiate a powerful slice upward, but no slice downward, putting Kirby into his helpless state.

Cutter Kirby in the anime

Cutter Kirby in Kirby: Right Back at Ya! uses the same hat as the later games, and appears whenever Kirby manages to inhale things like blades and saws (anything that's sharp except for an actual sword). It is revealed here that the Cutter that Kirby uses is stored on the hat when it isn't in use. This version of Cutter is based on the Kirby Super Star version, but with new attacks. Cutter Boomerang is the primary attack, but Kirby often uses Final Cutter to finish off enemies. He has one attack exclusive to the anime thus far, Cutter Beam, which fires off a long-ranged, blade-shaped beam from his cutter while he is spinning. He uses this attack to slice King Dedede's Limousine in half while they are attempting to flee from him in it in War of the Woods.

Transformation Sequence[]

In the transformation sequence, the Cutter cap lands on Kirby's head and spins before bouncing and coming to a stop in the proper position. The Cutter appears and flies around Kirby, then lands on his cap from behind.

Trivia[]

  • The design of Cutter from Kirby Super Star onwards - especially the Cutter blade itself - may have been inspired by the Eye Slugger, an iconic fictional blade weapon used by the superhero Ultraseven in the 1967 tokusatsu TV series of the same name. This is especially apparent in how the blade attaches to Kirby's hat like a mohawk hairstyle, and is removed before being thrown. The Chakram Cutter in Kirby and the Forgotten Land continues this motif with a resemblance to Ultraseven's son, Ultraman Zero, who uses two blades attached in the same way as the Chakram hat.
  • Cutter's hat design seems to draw inspiration from Arale Norimaki’s baseball hat design-wise, as well as Chi-Chi's helmet from the early seasons of Dragon Ball in terms of usage.
  • The flavor text in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, as well as the ability icon, is a reference to the anime, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!
  • In Kirby Super Star, the Cutter Boomerang was blue whenever it was in use. In most appearances afterwards, it remains yellow when used.
  • Kirby could use Link's boomerang after swallowing the latter in the original Super Smash Bros., similar to the Cutter ability. In later Super Smash Bros. games, Link uses a bow and arrow as his neutral B, therefore Kirby gained a bow after swallowing him instead of a boomerang.
  • The bill of Cutter Kirby's hat in the games is white, but it is yellow in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!.
  • In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, there was originally going to be a Super Ability version of the Cutter ability, but it did not appear in the final version.
  • Cutter, along with AnimalCircus, and Spider, are the only abilities to include eyes as part of their design.
  • Pre-release screenshots of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards reveal that the colors of Cutter and Needle's ability icons were swapped; Cutter was originally orange and Needle was originally green.[1]
