The Theater in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Watch movies again! The Theater is unlocked!
— Description • Kirby Star Allies

The Theater is a menu feature appearing in many games in the Kirby series. It sometimes needs to be unlocked by fulfilling certain requirements, such as through completing a game's story mode.

The Theater allows the player to watch story clips and cutscenes from the game anytime he or she wishes to. Most cutscenes in the Theater need to be unlocked through viewing them while playing the game, while others are unlocked through completing the game 100%. While Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition does not have a Theater option, it does contain a feature called Kirby's History; this feature allows players to watch short clips from every previous Kirby video game (excluding Kirby's Toy Box and Kirby Slide), three full-length Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episodes, and a orchestral video called "Gourmet Race to Green Greens: Chamber Music." In the Japanese version, the player can read various editions of Kirby manga in this feature as well.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[]

Theater
Cutscene Description
The Dark Shadow Plays in the game's intro after the Nintendo 64, HAL Laboratory, and Nintendo logos are displayed. Shows Ripple Star, home to the peaceful Fairies, being engulfed in a strange black cloud of Dark Matter. Ribbon takes the Crystal and escapes Ripple Star before it is completely engulfed, but Dark Rimuru, Dark Rimura, and Dark Rimuro split off from the mass of Dark Matter and chase her through space, shattering the Crystal into tiny shards that fall onto the many planets. Ribbon, now without the full Crystal, falls toward Pop Star.
Kirby's Quest Plays upon starting a new file after watching or skipping the Copy Ability tutorial. Shows Kirby sitting and gazing at the stars in the sky. As he gets up, Ribbon crashes into him, causing them both to fall over onto the ground. Kirby notices Ribbon and her shard before getting hit in the back by a fallen Crystal Shard himself. As Kirby goes to retrieve the shard, Ribbon gets up with her small remnant of the Crystal, much to her disappointment. Kirby calls out to Ribbon and holds up a piece of the Crystal, which he combines with Ribbon's to make a slightly larger crystal, much to Ribbon's joy. However, Ribbon is still concerned, and looks into the distance as several shards fall from the sky. Kirby offers his help, to which the grateful Ribbon accepts, and the two wander into the distance to find the remaining Crystal Shards.
Waddle Dee? Plays upon entering the last room of Stage 1 of Pop Star. Shows Waddle Dee walking on a path and encountering a Crystal Shard, which he picks up. Dark Rimuru watches Waddle Dee and his Crystal Shard before attacking and possessing him. Kirby and Ribbon then arrive and notice Waddle Dee with his face to the ground. Kirby calls out to him, to which Waddle Dee slowly rises up, covering his face. When he uncovers himself, it's revealed that his appearance has been altered to the likeness of a Waddle Doo.
Waddle On! Plays after defeating Waddle Dee. Shows Dark Rimuru retreating, to which Kirby and Ribbon celebrate with a high five. Ribbon retrieves the Crystal Shard, and Kirby waves at Waddle Dee before running off with Ribbon. Waddle Dee, touched by Kirby's kind gesture, leaps ahead to catch up with Kirby and tag along to help Ribbon collect the Crystal Shards.
Art Attack Plays upon entering the last room of Stage 2 of Pop Star. Shows Adeleine painting on her easel, atop of a stump, before a Crystal Shard falls right next to her. Adeleine picks up the Crystal Shard and admires it briefly. Dark Rimura materializes from the easel, and when Adeleine goes to resume painting, it jumps out and possesses her. As Kirby and Waddle Dee are running along the path toward Adeleine's location, Adeleine stands up, surprising Kirby and causing Waddle Dee to bump into him. As Kirby and Waddle Dee look up at Adeleine, she opens her now red eyes, indicating she's been possessed.
Adding Adeleine Plays after defeating Adeleine. Shows Ribbon retrieving the Crystal Shard. Adeleine, now lying on the ground, wakes up and sits up, where she is greeted by Ribbon. Kirby and Waddle Dee give each other high fives before Ribbon returns to them and Adeleine offers to help and join their quest.
Dark Dedede Plays upon entering the last room of Stage 3 of Pop Star. Shows King Dedede standing atop his castle before noticing a Crystal Shard landed nearby. As King Dedede goes to pick it up, he notices Kirby and co. approaching. Right before Kirby can reach the Crystal Shard, Dedede snatches the shard and looks at Kirby mockingly, holding it out of Kirby's reach and admiring it for himself. Dark Rimuro crashes down, separating Kirby and Dedede. As Kirby and Dedede stare up at it, Dark Rimuro fixes its gaze on Dedede before possessing him into a state much like in Kirby's Dream Land 3.
A Reluctant Ally Plays after defeating Dedede. Shows Waddle Dee helping keep Dedede steady after his possession, during which Kirby, Adeleine, and Ribbon celebrate before running off and leaping off the castle while Waddle Dee and Dedede watch. As Waddle Dee turns back to his king, Dedede turns around and pouts, refusing to help in the quest. Dedede begins to walk away before stopping and turning to look behind himself; noticing Waddle Dee is still watching him, he turns back around and resumes his pouting. Waddle Dee then begins to leave, giving Dedede one last look before jumping off the castle. Dedede, now conflicted, brings himself to turn around and follow suit.
On to Rock Star Plays after defeating Whispy Woods. Shows Ribbon releasing the Crystal Shard, which transforms into a hole to Rock Star. Ribbon flies into the hole, after which Kirby, Waddle Dee, Adeleine, and Dedede jump in after her. The hole closes after them and the Crystal Shard reappears, then flies off into space, heading toward Rock Star.
Desert Desserts Plays after defeating Pix. Shows Ribbon flying and Dedede, Waddle Dee, and Adeleine walking through Rock a vast desert on Rock Star. Adeleine looks back, then calls to the others to stop, to which they all turn around and see Kirby, exhausted and lying on the ground. Kirby desperately reaches out before hallucinating Adeleine's head as an apple, Dedede's head as a cake, Ribbon as a strawberry, and Waddle Dee as a sparerib, before collapsing again. Adeleine then decides to paint food for everyone to eat: Dedede eats a sparerib, Waddle Dee eats a strawberry, Kirby eats an apple and a cake, and Adeleine eats a sandwich. Adeleine then paints another apple, which then falls off her easel. Ribbon, sitting down, watches the Crystal Shard transform into a hole to Aqua Star. Ribbon then flies into the hole, to which Dedede, Adeleine, and Waddle Dee jump in after her. Kirby, too distracted with eating (and facing the wrong way) gets pulled into the hole by Dedede, causing him to drop his cake. The hole closes and the Crystal Shard flies off.
All Washed Up Plays after defeating Acro. Shows Ribbon flying and Kirby, Waddle Dee, Adeleine, and Dedede sitting on the shore of a beach. Adeleine stands up, then tosses a rock into the water. Waddle Dee and Dedede begin to do the same before Kirby picks up a rock and starts winding up his toss. While Kirby is distracted, Adeleine, Waddle Dee, Dedede, and Ribbon look out into the water in shock and run away. Unbeknownst to Kirby, eyes closed and still winding up his throw, a large wave approached the beach. Kirby throws his rock, only to be taken by the wave, then brought back to shore, face down. As Kirby looks up, he notices the hole to Neo Star; Ribbon and Waddle Dee had already entered the hole, and Dedede and Adeleine, the latter looking back at Kirby, follow suit. Kirby then hastily gets up and jumps into the hole. The hole closes and the Crystal Shard flies off.
Hot Waddle Dawdle Plays after defeating Magman. Shows Kirby and co. peacefully gazing at the Crystal Shard while atop a mountain. However, the ground begins shaking and a nearby volcano erupts. Now in danger, Kirby and co. panic and run off the mountain as volcanic rocks land where they had once stood. The Crystal Shard, moving ahead of them, transforms into a hole to Shiver Star. Ribbon flies in, followed by Dedede jumping in, who then helps pull Adeleine in, and Kirby jumping in. Waddle Dee, lagging behind, struggles to reach the moving hole; Kirby then partially emerges from the hole and uses his inhale to grab Waddle Dee and pull him into the hole, much to the latter's dismay. The hole closes soon afterward and the Crystal Shard flies away.
Ripple Rescue Plays after defeating HR-H and HR-E. Shows Kirby and co. gazing at the Crystal Shard before it transforms into a hole to Ripple Star. Ribbon, in shock and horror at the sight of her home corrupted by Dark Matter, looks back at her newfound friends. Dedede, Adeleine, Waddle Dee, and Kirby assure Ribbon that everything will be okay and that they're there for her. Kirby calls the others to enter the hole, but trips over before he can jump in. Dedede then jumps onto and bounces off of Kirby into the hole, to which Adeleine and Waddle Dee do the same. Ribbon then pulls Kirby off the ground and carries him into the hole. The hole closes and the Crystal Shard flies away.
Fare...well? Plays after defeating Miracle Matter if not all Crystal Shards were collected. Shows the Crystal Shard expelling the dark cloud that engulfed Ripple Star, which then floats off into space. Kirby and co. celebrate, and after spending a brief time on the planet, Fairy Queen, the other Fairies, and Ribbon send their goodbyes to Kirby, Waddle Dee, Adeleine, and Dedede, who are given a ship to fly home with. Before Kirby can jump into the ship, Ribbon calls to him and the two hold hands briefly before Kirby boards the ship, with Waddle Dee and Adeleine waving while Dedede is teary-eyed. The ship flies off into the sky while Ribbon and the Fairy Queen look up at it. While Ribbon is still waving at the bygone ship, the Fairy Queen gives a malicious gaze toward the distracted Ribbon; this could also be interpreted as a fourth-wall break, with her looking at the player instead.
This cutscene appears in the Theater even if it never appears normally.
Darkness Calls Plays after defeating Miracle Matter with all Crystal Shards collected. The beginning plays similarly to "Fare...well?" but the dark cloud explodes instead of floating off into space. The Crystal rises and fires a beam of light at the Fairy Queen, exorcizing her of the Dark Matter that inhabited her, causing her to collapse onto the ground. The dark cloud then floats off into space and forms Dark Star. Ribbon, floating by the Fairy Queen's unconscious body, stares up into the sky in horror as darkness eclipses it. Kirby then pulls out a phone and calls his Warp Star to the planet. It falls down from the sky and lands right next to Kirby, causing him to fly backward. Waddle Dee, Adeleine, Dedede, and Ribbon all board the Warp Star, to which Kirby rushes onto it before it can fly away. The fairies surround their queen and look upon the Warp Star, flying away to Dark Star while Kirby precariously holds on with one hand.
Crystal Clear! Plays after defeating . Shows Dark Star becoming unstable. The Warp Star flies out and Dark Star explodes. Back on Ripple Star, a celebration is being held for the deeds of Kirby and co. The Fairy Queen gives out necklaces with crystals on them to Dedede, Adeleine, Waddle Dee, and then Kirby. Ribbon then gives Kirby a kiss on the cheek, slightly embarrassed. Kirby blushes at the gesture and twirls around before losing his balance and flying down the stairs, to the panic of Kirby's friends.

Trivia[]

KMA Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows with one Kirby

  • Kirby Mass Attack is the only game in the series in which cutscenes are altered based on the player's performance. The Dark Shadows and Necro Nebula cutscenes show the number of Kirbys the player has when he/she initiates them; there is even a version of each that changes the narration to fit with the player having one Kirby. If one or more of the heroes is lost in the battle against Necrodeus, the Kirby among the Stars cutscene depicts one of the Kirbys as a KO'd Kirby.[1]
  • Kirby: Planet Robobot is the first game in the series in which certain cutscenes do not progress unless the player scrolls through dialogue using the A Button. Some games, such as Kirby: Squeak Squad, allow the player to speed through text using the A Button, but still progress if the player does nothing.
  • The music that plays during the staff roll of the Theater in Kirby: Planet Robobot, "Pocket Diary", is a remix of Grape Garden from Kirby's Adventure.
  • A glitch appears in Kirby Star Allies; during the battle against Void Termina, remove the second player's character in the fourth phase, and continue the battle as normal, then play "Star Allies: Return from Afar" in the Theater. Player 3 is shown to do a T-pose without their respective Helper hat. This only works with certain combinations. This glitch has been patched in the 3.0.0 update.
  • In Kirby Star Allies, there is a 25% chance for The Three Mage-Sisters to replace the Waddle Doo, Waddle Dee, and Burning Leo that typically appear in the game's Theater once the "Happy Ending" is achieved in Heroes in Another Dimension. This also occurs in the Jukebox.
  • In the Waddle Dee Cinema in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, the Present Code "KIRBYSTORY" can be found by checking a pamphlet in the lobby; this appears to be a reference to Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on the Game Boy Advance, as the Yoshi Theater has a poster for a movie titled "KIRBY STORY." This is not present in the remake, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, as the Yoshi Theater was redesigned and has new posters.
