Lash foes with a whip-like beam! Dash for Cycle! Grab and Capture! Spin in midair for a Revolution! Charge it up, and BAM! Wave Beam!
— Flavor Text • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Beam is a Copy Ability in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Adventure.

Games[]

Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[]

Beam focuses on creating a whip of electricity that Kirby swings in front of him to deal damage. Beam is obtained from the Waddle Doo enemy.

Techniques[]

Move Controls Description
Beam Whip B Kirby swings an electric whip in front of him. It's weak and has short range, but it can hit through surfaces and covers a decent amount of area in front of Kirby, hitting enemies and objects that are slightly above or below him.

Move Controls Description

Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra[]

Beam now gives Kirby a yellow and red jester hat and makes Kirby yellow. Beam now has multiple moves, and also uses a staff instead of Kirby's hand. In addition to being obtained from Waddle Doo, who is its Helper, Beam can also be obtained from Laser Ball (which had given the Laser Copy Ability prior to this game).

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad[]

As with Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which preceded it, Beam is limited to just the Beam Whip; however, it now hits multiple times. Beam's Thunder element is also more prevalent in these games. In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, it is able to directly damage Mega Titan, who can only otherwise be damaged by being knocked into the arena's electric walls. Beam is obtained from Waddle Doo.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Beam can electrify the surfaces of water and metal. If the player mixes two Ability bubbles and shakes them until there are green bubbles, there is a chance that the resulting Ability bubble will be Beam. Upon obtaining the Beam Ability Scroll, located in the second Treasure Chest in Stage 5 of Nature Notch, Beam now has a more powerful Beam Whip; it does more damage, but the sparks it sends on conductive surfaces remain unchanged. Beam is obtained from Waddle Doo.

Beam no longer makes Kirby yellow, likely due to the potential confusion in multiplayer and the Spray Paint function that allows the player to change the color of Kirby.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[]

Beam Whip now spins a full 360° around Kirby instead of covering just the area in front of him. The player can also hold the stylus on Kirby to keep him in place while the Beam Whip continuously spins around him. Upon letting go, the Beam Whip will continue for one more revolution before ending.

As Kirby: Canvas Curse only allows Copy Abilities to be used within the stages they are found, Beam can only be used in certain locations. Beam can be found in the following areas:

Waddle Doo Ball acts as a permanent version of the Beam ability, and has five vitality.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]

As with Kirby Super Star Ultra, which preceded it, Beam now has many moves at its disposal, the most it has had in all of its appearances. It also received the ability to swing the Beam Whip 360° from Kirby: Canvas Curse. Beam can be obtained from Waddle Doo, Gemra, the King Doo mid-boss, and Metal General's Metal Bits.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby Fighters Deluxe, and Kirby: Planet Robobot[]

Beam is mostly unchanged from its appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. However, it lacks Revolution Beam. Beam can obtained from Waddle Doo and Masked Dedede's Revenge's and Shadow Dedede's Shining Axe shots.

In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Beam's Rare Outfit gives it Marx's hat.

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, Beam can be used by Robobot Armor and its electricity can also be used to power wires to solve certain puzzles. Beam is also the base for the Beam Mage role in Team Kirby Clash. Beam can be obtained from Waddle Doo, King Doo, Security Force's Metal Bits, Holo Defense API's Holo-Kracko Waddle Doo spawns, Dedede Clone 2.0's Shining Hammer shots, and the R.O.B. amiibo.

Beam Kirby[]

In Kirby Fighters and Kirby Fighters Deluxe, any invincibility granted by a move is removed, except when fighting bosses, i.e. Kracko, Team DDD.

In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and Super Kirby Clash, Time Beam's time stop effect is 50% more effective on aerial bosses, but the charge level 3 was reduced to 25% and Time Beam's effectiveness decays after each successful time stop; after the first time stop, it decays by 10% (e.g. level 3 fills the meter by 22.5% instead of 25%). Kirby Star Allies[]

Beam can now use its Zap element to enhance other Copy Abilities. It can also once again electrify the surface of water and power wires, in addition to powering lights. In addition to being obtained from Waddle Doo, who is its Friend Helper, Beam can also be obtained from Zan Partizanne's attacks that create orange stars and Void Termina's/Void Soul's/Void's attacks that create orange stars.

Trivia[]

  • In Kirby Super Star, it erroneously states that the input for Beam machine gun is Dash + B (in the air), when in reality, it is the Y Button that needs to be pressed, not B (which is the jump button).
  • In the official artwork for both Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, stars are present on both sides of Beam Kirby's hat.
    • This is also true of the Mirror ability. In these games, Mirror Kirby's hat is a recolored version of Beam Kirby's hat.
    • Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra are also the only games that have artwork with the hat colors on the wrong sides.
    • However, both of these artworks have Kirby facing left instead of right, which are technically accurate to the in-game sprites due to sprite flipping.
  • Although the Beam ability didn't appear in Kirby's Dream Land 2 or Kirby's Dream Land 3, the Spark Rick move is near identical to Beam.
  • It is common for handheld Kirby titles to repeat flavor text, evidenced by the fact that Beam has the same flavor text in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Kirby: Squeak Squad also retained this quote, but added two more "Beam it!"s to the end.
  • While most games show Kirby firing a beam from his hand, Kirby Super Star, its remake, and Kirby's Return to Dream Land onwards show Kirby using a magical wand to fire his beam.
  • Revolution Beam still exists in the code of Kirby: Triple Deluxe. However, the move can only be performed through the means of hacking. This is also true of Spinning Fire Breath and Triple Hammer. The move is fully functional, though it lacks particle effects. The animations for Revolution Beam still exist in Kirby: Planet Robobot, but the code has been removed, making the move completely inaccessible even through hacking.
BBB Beam

Qbby dresses in Kirby's Beam Ability Hat.

  • In BOXBOXBOY! the comic "Kirby's Closet" depicts Qbby trying on Kirby's Beam Ability Hat. The comic ends with him turning around to find Kirby watching him.
