Collect the Metamortex that can be found on stages and you'll transform into various objects and be able to perform special actions.
— Official European Kirby's Epic Yarn website

A Metamortex is a circular ball of yarn with a rainbow-colored icon in the middle that gives Kirby his super transformations, which take the place of Copy Abilities in Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. The transformation given depends on the icon on the Metamortex. There are other Metamortexes which power-up Kirby and Prince Fluff already in a super transformation.

Location[]

Metamortex patch

Metamortex patch

Super transformation Metamortexes are hidden behind a circular patch that resembles the Metamortex itself, without the icon in the middle. The Metamortex will be revealed when the patch is removed using the Yarn Whip. Power-up Metamortexes are never hidden behind a patch.

Appearance[]

Metamortexes always have a rotating spiral outer yarn border of 2 different colors. These two colors, along with Kirby's red and pink, and Prince Fluff's blue and orange, make up the final appearance and color scheme of the super transformation. Power-up Metamortexes do not rotate, and have 2 circular outer borders.

Transformation sequence[]

Every Transformation sequence starts with a Metamortex patch, and Kirby and Prince Fluff cannot move forward until either character touches the Metamortex. Kirby and Prince Fluff are then permanently transformed until they touch the Reel Gate, which is a vertical or horizontal wooden bar which the two wrap themselves around to get rid of the extra yarn from the Metamortex, thus ending the super transformation sequence. Kirby and Prince Fluff cannot pass through the reel gate in normal form.

Control scheme[]

For the Off-Roader, Spin Boarder and Tankbot forms, the character who touches the Metamortex assumes the main form and the player controlling him is granted full controls, and player 2, if present, is granted a support power. In Train form, however, players take turns drawing tracks. In Digger, Dolphin, Fire Engine, Rocket, Saucer, and Star Shooter forms, players have independent control as Kirby and Prince Fluff transform separately.

Etymology[]

The 'Metamor' part of 'Metamortex' comes from metamorphosis, referring to its ability to transform Kirby and Prince Fluff into other shapes, while the '-ortex' part comes from vortex, in reference to its spiraling appearance.

Trivia[]

  • When Kirby and Prince Fluff battle Mega Yin-Yarn, Meta Knight flies along and drops a Metamortex granting the Tankbot super transformation. This is the only non-power-up Metamortex not hidden behind a circular Metamortex patch in the main story (though some also appear in some challenges, such as Beadrix's).
  • It is possible the Metamato is affiliated with the Metamortex, as Kirby was able to turn himself into a car sometime after he ate it.
