Electricity in your hands! Wiggle Left Stick to create a Spark Barrier! Zap foes from above with a sudden Lightning Strike!
— Flavor Text • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Spark is one of Kirby's Copy Abilities introduced in Kirby's Adventure. With this ability, Kirby is able to surround himself in sparks of electricity, shocking any enemy that comes near.

Games[]

Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[]

Spark first appears in Kirby's Adventure. Here, it only has one move, in which Kirby surrounds himself with electricity, damaging enemies and destroying certain objects around him. Spark is obtained from Sparky.

In the remake of Kirby's Adventure, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Spark returns, with Kirby now having a hat similar to that of Plasma in Kirby Super Star. Spark's moveset remains unchanged otherwise.

Kirby's Dream Course[]

In Kirby's Dream Course, Spark is the most powerful offensive ability, as it is the only means of defeating Whispy Woods and Kracko. However, it has no effect against Gordo. Some holes are designed to be very difficult if Kirby cannot smash through multiple Whispy Woods in his path. Unlike other abilities in the game, it does not modify Kirby's movement or speed at all.

Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3[]

Spark reappears in Kirby's Dream Land 2, with the same moveset as Kirby's Adventure. However, it can now be combined with Animal Friends to create a new range of attacks. It is obtained from Sparky and Master Green.

Spark also appears in Kirby's Dream Land 3, obtained from Sparky, Bobin, and yellow wand-wielding Bukiset. The addition of Pitch, ChuChu, and Nago allow for further combinations.

Kirby's Block Ball[]

Spark reappears in Kirby's Block Ball, again obtained from Sparky. Here, Kirby generates electricity around him, allowing him to break most types of blocks he moves through as long as the force field is activated.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[]

Spark appears in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, obtained from Sparky, Plugg, Zoos, Turbite, Spark-i, and Miracle Matter's electric balls. The biggest change is that Spark now allows Kirby to move, albeit slowly and with a reduced force-field size, while using the main attack. Spark can also be combined with other Copy Abilities to form new Power Combos.

Techniques[]

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad[]

Spark returns in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, using the same moveset as Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. It is obtained from Sparky.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Spark can now be charged up to create more powerful attacks, and the Ability Scroll, found in Cushy Cloud - Stage 3, allows Kirby to create barriers and fire long-ranged charged-up attacks.

It does not protect against certain hazards, such as spikes and falling rocks. Damage weakens the shield, and it disappears if Kirby uses any of his attacks. Maximum charge gives Kirby a shield as large as his basic Spark Attack, which makes offensive use easier since he can now effectively move around with the same effect. Kirby can perform this after obtaining the Ability Scroll. Zap

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]

Spark returns in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, where it gains an expanded moveset, like Plasma did in Kirby Super Star. Spark is gained from Sparky, Elec, Dubior, Dubior Jr., and green Sphere Doomer's energy balls. Here, to charge up Spark, the Wii Remote can be shaken instead of mashing the control pad (although that option still works), meaning that Kirby's movement doesn't have to be interrupted to charge up.

Spark also appears in the remake, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, functioning identically. Electricky Dooter's electrified skulls also give the ability when inhaled in The True Arena.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[]

Spark returns in Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition in the New Challenge Stages mode. Here, there is a Spark challenge, and the ability can additionally be used in Magolor Races 1, 3, and EX. Its moveset is the same as Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Techniques[]

These controls are for the Wii Classic Controller (Pro), but also work with the Nintendo GameCube Controller. Wii Remote controls are the same as in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot[]

Spark returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, with several moves from Kirby's Return to Dream Land being cut. It is obtained from Sparky and Green Antler.

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, Spark is now additionally obtained from Telepathos' electric blasts, Security Force's drones, and the projectiles sent out by Susie and President Haltmann, as well as the Pikachu, Chibi-Robo, and Robin amiibo. The moves removed from Kirby: Triple Deluxe are also restored. Spark is also a compatible mode with the Robobot Armor.

— Meta Knight • Dedede's Raw Deal

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Spark Kirby appears in Dedede's Raw Deal and Tooned Out. Spark Kirby has green skin. The crown is changed slightly to just a round blue orb in a simple circlet. It also becomes more of a long-distance defense move like Plasma, with Kirby launching orbs of crackling energy and shooting electric beams at his foes. He also retains the ability to sprout electricity from his body exactly like in the games. In the transformation sequence, the orb slams onto Kirby's forehead. The top of his head catches on blue fire. The blue fire disappears as soon as the blue sparks appear and Kirby turns green. Spark is one of two abilities in the anime to successfully defeat a threat every time Kirby uses it (the other being Crash).

Trivia[]

  • In its artwork from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, it appears to have a design later seen in the anime. This was corrected in later artwork.
    • Curiously, the Spark ability was not used in the anime until the end of the show's run. By that time, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land was over a year old. It is likely that Spark Kirby's anime design was finalized before the game was released and long before it was featured in any episodes.
  • In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the electricity on Spark's hat solidifies.
  • More enemies yield the Spark ability than any other Copy Ability in the series, with a total of 18 (12 enemies carry the ability themselves, six shoot projectiles that carry the ability).
  • The moves "Thunderbolt" and "Lightning Strike" were cut from Kirby: Triple Deluxe, though it still exists in the code. The moves can only be accessed through hacking, and function exactly the same as they did in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
  • The flavor text for Spark in Kirby: Triple Deluxe references the fact that Spark's moveset has been merged with that of Plasma.
  • Spark's appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2 is very similar to the Kirby on the cover of Kirby's Block Ball.
  • Strangely, a move extremely similar to Plasma's Light Speed Dash move in Kirby Star Allies exists for Spark in the code of Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot, the main difference being that it can be used infinitely with no charge requirement. The move can only be accessed through hacking, and is fully functional. The reason it why was cut is unknown.
