Ultra Sword, one of five available Super Abilities in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

A Super Ability is a time-limited ability in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Games[]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]

Super Abilities are "Super" versions of regular Copy Abilities; they're obtained from Super versions of the enemies that give those respective abilities, and their appearances reflect their super nature, often being exaggerated forms of the base Copy Ability hat, as well as having a large glowing star. Enemies that grant a Super Ability are auto swallowed upon being inhaled, and even if defeated through other means, an ability star will be left behind; inhaling or even touching this ability star as a Kirby will give the Super Ability. If another player gets a Super Ability while one is already active, the original one will be dropped in favor of the new one.

Super Abilities are capable of destroying terrain and large objects, as well as obliterating regular enemies and defeating large foes. Super Abilities, however, only last for a limited time and dropping a Super Ability will also cause its ability star to shatter (this isn't the case in the remake); it also cannot be carried through the Goal Door. Aside from clearing the way and solving some puzzles, Super Abilities are primarily used for finding dimensional rifts hidden in the environment that lead to Another Dimension, where the player will fight a Sphere Doomer to obtain two Energy Spheres. Super Abilities are sometimes used to fight bosses and mid-bosses.

There are five Super Abilities, each one appearing an average of three times over the course of the game's normal stages.

Trivia[]

KRtDL Super Cutter hat

Super Cutter's ability hat.

  • Assets for an unused Super Cutter ability are present in the game's files; it would most likely be obtained by inhaling a Super Sir Kibble. It was likely not included in the game due to its resemblance to Ultra Sword. An unused Super Spark ability icon can also be found, but likely didn't come to fruition in favor of Flare Beam.
    • There is also a clock icon, which reverts Kirby back to normal. This was likely scrapped because of its redundant nature.[1]
  • Snow Bowl and Monster Flame are the only two Super Abilities that do not have the normal counterpart's name in them.
    • Those two abilities are also the only ones that do not have Kirby holding a weapon.
  • Stage 2 of Dangerous Dinner in the remake is the only stage with two Super Abilities available, excluding the fight with Magolor.
    • Additionally, Super Abilities can completely drain a boss's health bar in one hit (outside of certain instances during battles with Grand Doomer and Magolor), however, this cannot be done legitimately, as there are no instances where a Super Ability can be brought to a boss (excluding the aforementioned Grand Doomer and Magolor bosses).[2]
  • In addition to specific terrain objects, Super Abilities can also destroy Pop Flowers and signs.
  • Ultra Sword is the most iconic of all the Super Abilities, being featured on the North American version's box art, was one of the first two Super Abilities officially shown off in a teaser trailer [3] (the other being Monster Flame), is the first Super Ability obtained in the game, is the last Super Ability used in a regular stage, and is used to deliver the final blows to both Grand Doomer and Magolor. Additionally, it appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as Kirby's Final Smash, in Magolor's moveset in Kirby Star Allies and Kirby Fighters 2, and in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, where it was forged by Magolor in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler to finish off the Master Crown.
  • A glitch involving Ultra Sword can be performed on Magolor: two players need to be Kirby, one with Ultra Sword. When one player uses it to finish Magolor off, the second player should also attack right afterwards; this is easily performed with Spark's Spark Barrier. Magolor will block the first player's Ultra Sword, but will receive damage from the second player; once his health reaches zero during the clash, the music stops playing, but the players lose the ability to do anything. Magolor then behaves as though winning the clash and stays alive with a regenerated portion of his Magic Barrier and resumes the boss fight. The Kirbys, however, cannot move, but also won't lose any health, and the console must be reset.
  • Magolor's second boss form and Magolor Soul can attack Kirby using dark versions of all the Super Abilities except Snow Bowl.
    • However, in the Magolor Soul boss fight, the Grand Hammer and Ultra Sword attack contain the Blizzard element. It can be assumed that these are fused with Snow Bowl.
  • In The True Arena in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Magolor Soul in his second phase has two new moves that utilize super powered versions of Sand and Mecha. Because his other dark Super Ability moves are mostly identical to Kirby's own Super Abilities in terms of appearance (such as how Magolor's Monster Flame looks exactly like Kirby's but dark blue or light blue depending on the form), one can assume that if the two abilities had super versions, they would likely resemble these attacks, possibly only with a different color scheme.
  • Excluding boss battles, each Super Ability appears exactly three times.
  • The Super Ability music is one of the songs that plays in the last extra stage of Far-Flung - Starlight Heroes, Extra Planet δ, in Kirby Star Allies.
  • In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Kirby says "Hiyah!" anytime he receives a Super Ability. Makiko Ohmoto had a short debate with Shinya Kumazaki about this issue during Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Fest., in which Ohmoto claimed that she did not say it during the recording. Listening to the voice clip alone in the sound test shows that Kirby is actually saying something like “Tiyah”.
