Packing pure destructive power, it's a Super Ability! Its name: Ultra Sword! It can rend the Earth as it destroys all in its path!
— Flavor Text • Kirby's Return to Dream Land

Ultra Sword is a Super Ability introduced in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. This ability can be granted by inhaling a Super Blade Knight.

Ultra Sword is an upgraded version of Sword. Unlike other Super Abilities, the Ultra Sword is also used to finish off three bosses - Grand Doomer and Magolor's first phase (as well as their EX versions), and the Master Crown when fought by Magolor in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler. It also is used in Dangerous Dinner - Stage 3 to defeat every mid-boss (except Super Bonkers and Sphere Doomers), obliterating each in just one chop.

In Kirby Star Allies, Magolor can utilize an Ultra Sword in his Dream Friend moveset. His has a purple handle as opposed to Kirby's light blue one, and the central symbol is an Energy Sphere instead of a star. This Ultra Sword is also in Magolor's moveset in Kirby Fighters 2. Said Ultra Sword was created in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe's Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, where Magolor forged it to destroy the Master Crown.

Games[]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]

The Ultra Sword makes its debut in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. When Kirby swings it, the weapon destroys all destroyable terrain and defeats every enemy within a wide arc in front of Kirby. The weapon can change every swing; the outcomes are a sword, cutlass, shinai, meat cleaver, Galaxia, bluefin tuna, or a golden fan. In the remake, the Gigant Sword and the Morpho Knight Sword are added to the outcomes.

The Ultra Sword first appears in Cookie Country - Stage 1, where Kirby obtains it from Super Blade Knight. There, Kirby uses the ability to destroy the ground and defeat enemies in one hit, until Kirby reaches a cracked flooring buried into the ground, which is destroyed with the ability, revealing a Dimensional rift.

The Ultra Sword is used again in Raisin Ruins - Stage 4 to cut some large ropes serving as the foundation of many platforms. At the end of the section, there is a platform held up by two ropes. Once Kirby cuts through both of them, the platform will fall, revealing a Dimensional rift.

During the fight against Grand Doomer in Nutty Noon - Stage 6, after Grand Doomer creates a protective shield when his HP gets low, he summons multiple enemies, one of them being a Super Blade Knight. When Kirby inhales the enemy, he gets Ultra Sword again. Grand Doomer is vulnerable hen he uses his Bounce Attack (his EX form is also vulnerable when using his Flame Dash attack); teleporting does not give Kirby enough time to swing his sword at him. After Grand Doomer loses his armor after four hits, he will move to the foreground to regenerate his armor, giving Kirby a chance to strike him down.

Ultra Sword appears again in Dangerous Dinner - Stage 3, where Kirby uses it to finish off rounds of mid-bosses in one hit (excluding Super Bonkers). Near the end of a stage, there is a large volcano that Kirby must slice through to reveal the Dimensional rift.

Ultra Sword appears one more time during the fight against Magolor in Another Dimension. After Magolor is down to one shield piece, he summons a Super Blade Knight for Kirby to inhale and get Ultra Sword from. Kirby uses the Ultra Sword to destroy the last shield piece, then when Magolor moves to the foreground to regenerate, Kirby uses the Ultra Sword to finish him off: in the original game, this is achieved by shaking the Wii Remote, whereas in the remake, this is done by moving the joystick, although shaking the controllers also work. Afterwards, Kirby will slice through him several times, before unleashing a giant Ultra Sword to strike the Master Crown, ending the first phase. If Kirby fails, the ability will be dispersed from Kirby, and Magolor will regenerate a shield piece. However, the Ultra Sword is not actually required to finish Magolor off, as by using multiplayer or a Random Copy Essence, other attacks can actually defeat Magolor without using the Ultra Sword.

During Magolor's second phase and Magolor Soul's boss fight, if Kirby still has his Ultra Sword ability or the Ability Star is still there, Magolor will start the battle by dispersing the ability or the star; this also disperses other Kirbys' abilities is playing in multiplayer. During the second phase of the fight, Magolor will use darkened Ultra Swords against Kirby; Magolor Soul's Ultra Swords resemble Galaxias instead.

In Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler (exclusive to the remake), Magolor pulls out a sword from the rubble, and transforms it into an Ultra Sword with his magic; the Ultra Sword is the same one used in Kirby Star Allies and Kirby Fighters 2. Magolor uses the Ultra Sword to finish the Master Crown off; this is done the same way as how it as used against Magolor in Story and Extra Mode. If Magolor is unsuccessful, the Master Crown will push him back, damaging him, and Magolor will have to try again. Once successfully executed, the Ultra Sword will split the Master Crown in two.

In Samurai Kirby, Kirby uses the Ultra Sword to attack Magolor.

Kirby Star Allies[]

One of Morpho Knight's attacks include pulling.out two swords and growing them to giant size, swinging them in front of him in a similar style to the Ultra Sword twice, before swinging them to his sides. The Morpho Knight Sword appearing as part of the Ultra Sword's moveset in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe further reinforces this connection.

Magolor's moveset includes an attack that has him pull out an Ultra Sword and swing it in front of him, damaging all enemies as well as interactive objects. In Guest Star Magolor: Best Friends Forever, Magolor's Ultra Sword is used to replicate the original Ultra Sword attacks in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Kirby Fighters 2[]

Magolor utilizes his Ultra Sword the same was as Kirby Star Allies.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[]

Although the Ultra Sword does not appear in this game, Morpho Knight can again grow his sword and swing it in a similar fashion to the Ultra Sword.

The Gigant Sword and Morpho Knight Sword are swung in similar styles to the Ultra Sword, with the latter being triggered by charging the sword, and the growth effect is temporary. Both weapons would be added into Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe as alternate forms of the Ultra Sword.

In the Super Smash Bros. series[]

Ultra Sword appears as Kirby's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It replaces Cook, Kirby's Final Smash from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When used, Kirby will change his appearance to that of the Ultra Sword Super Ability. He will slash at his opponent several times in quick succession as they are unable to move, before performing a finishing blow and sending them flying.

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Kirby wielding the Ultra Sword appears as a collectible trophy.

Related Quotes[]

For Kirby's Final Smash, he swings a sword that's waaay bigger than he is. If the first swing hits, he'll keep going with a combo of lightning-fast slices, dealing tons of damage. For the last swing, the sword grows even larger and launches any victims. Make sure that first swing hits, though, or nothing else will happen!

Trivia[]

  • Unlike the other Super Abilities, Ultra Sword will randomly change the weapon used when attacking.
    • This makes Ultra Sword one of the few abilities to have a multi-form attack; the others being Stone, Archer, Circus, and Artist.
  • Upon using Ultra Sword to defeat Grand Doomer, he always initially uses the cutlass. This is most likely a reference to the fact that it was his default sword before the game officially came out.
  • The Ultra Sword is the only Super Ability that has a revamped song when acquired, which is only used in two instances: the Grand Doomer battle and Stage 3 of Dangerous Dinner. The song is known as "Ultra-Super Boss Battle."
    • When Magolor forges his own Ultra Sword and uses it against the Master Crown, another song that combines the "Bring On the Super Ability!," "Welcome Your New Overlord," and "Judgement of the Malus Pumila" leitmotifs known as "Settling a Score - Atone for One's Misdeeds!" plays.
  • In the second phase of the fight against Magolor, for one of his moves, he uses two darkened Ultra Swords. Magolor Soul instead uses two darkened Galaxias for the attack, possibly as a reminder that Extra Mode makes enemies stronger.
  • When used as his Final Smash, Kirby will slice any captured opponents ten times, with the last slice launching them.
  • In a Super Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct, Masahiro Sakurai stated that the Ultra Sword is "capable of slicing through anything."[1]
  • The Ultra Sword appears in Kirby: Planet Robobot as a sticker.
  • In Kirby: Planet Robobot, Stone can rarely produce a Golden Statue of Ultra Sword Kirby wielding the Bluefin Tuna. In Kirby Star Allies and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the statue also appears, albeit in silver.
BBB Ultra Sword

Qbby dresses in Kirby's Ultra Sword Ability Hat.

  • In the BOXBOXBOY! comic "Kirby's Closet," Qbby is depicted as trying on the Ultra Sword Hat and carrying the sword itself. The comic ends with him turning around to find Kirby watching him.
  • In Kirby Battle Royale and Kirby Fighters 2, one of Sword's alternative outfits is based on Ultra Sword.
  • In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Kirby will vocalize in an identical fashion to his Ultra Sword Final Smash from the Super Smash Bros. series when landing the final blow on Magolor with the Ultra Sword.
